LearnSci within practical education

The most unexpected discoveries are often made closest to home. With this in mind, you can read here how fellow Ghent University lecturers shape their own teaching practice. Who knows, maybe this story will inspire you too?

Description

BWithin the practical for this course, a student studies the development of leaf hairs on plants via fluorescence microscopy or Western Blot. The aim of the study is to map the location of the gene that influences trichome development using a mutant population. As this is perceived as difficult by students, the practical included a preparation course in Ufora with LearnSci simulations and self-tests.

Prior to the practical, students have to complete two learning paths in Ufora. The first addresses the theoretical background and the research question. Each section consists of a web page and a concluding self-test. Here, students also encounter an first LearnSci simulation: a short, theoretical simulation that can be thought of as an interactive powerpoint.

The second learning path deals with the practical side and how to answer the research question. Through another LearnSci simulation, a student refreshes the theory around protein separation, after which a third simulation illustrates how to load an SDS-PAGE.

Throughout the learning paths, release conditions are used consistently so that students have to respect the chronology and structure of the learning path. When at the end of the learning path they have taken at least one attempt at each self-test, they also unlock the practical notes and thus their access to the lab.

Those considering using LearnSci within their own education at Ghent University can find the accompanying manual on the 'Virtual Science Labs' project's education tip under 'LearnSci'.
