Via a work placement in the French-speaking part of Belgium or abroad, students can acquire specific international/intercultural competencies. Every student at Ghent University should have acquired these competencies at the end of the study programme. Strengthening professional skills in an intercultural/international context has a positive impact on the student’s personal and professional development. Moreover, working in a context in which a foreign language is used allows students to deepen and expand their foreign language skills  

 

Be careful!

• A work placement abroad (in Dutch) is only possible within the resolution framework of Ghent University which has narrowed, temporarily or permanently, since the start of the coronavirus. This can always be subject to change.
• Study programmes can also screen work placements in Belgium to see whether they can be used to acquire international/intercultural competencies, a.o. because of the (current) limitations in finding work placements abroad. In Brussels, for example, students can also work in a context in which a foreign language is used.  

 

The preparation for a work placement abroad includes: 

• administration (registration, residence documents, insurance, etc.) and other practicalities (a.o. accommodation, transportation, etc.);
• preparing language and intercultural skills;
• taking into account health and security aspects (in Dutch) (travel advice, vaccinations, etc.); 
• specific points of attention for work placements in the Global South;
• looking for financial support.
